2nd PLACE OVERALL CONFERENCE FINISH!

Yesterday 70 Torpedo swimmers and countless family members braved the heat to take part in what was to be a 10 hour epic meet. Many races were extremely close. Mack M. won the 13-14 50 Free by .01 seconds, Sam F. came in second in the 100 Breast by .5 seconds, and the 15-18 Boys "Team Albryrosskey" came in second to Morganton by .01 seconds. Third place in that relay was "Team Lantard," who touched just.27 seconds after Morganton. That is just to name a few of the harrowing races.
After a rough start with a lot of disqualifications in multiple medley relays, the Torpedo picked up speed. After event 18, Valdese was behind the Granite Falls Sharks, Morganton Marlins, and McDowell Mariners. Following the individual medley races, Valdese had moved up to second, and the Torpedo would not be moved for the rest of the day. The McDowell Mariners edged within 15 points after event 52, but the tremendous butterfly, breaststroke and relay swims led the Torpedo to a 97 point final lead over McDowell.
The men's "Fools in the Pool" Relay, led by Benton Brinkley and Todd Blackwell finished second, and the combined Granite Falls-Valdese women's relay finished third.
With few exceptions, the Torpedo had representation in all of the high point categories, including a sweep of the 15-18 boys category (Zach K., Alec B., TIED: Grant G. and Liam L.), second and third in the 11-12 boys (Austin G. and Tyler G.), and first and third in the 13-14 boys (Tanner S. and Sam F.). Trey B. took third in the 9-10 boys. The 9-10 girls category brought Kenzie B. the first place trophy and Caroline L. took third in the 8 and under girls.
Coach Matt and I are extremely proud of all the hard work the parents, swimmers, and volunteers put forth to bring us up from our 4th place finish last year. It has been a great season, and we look forward to seeing you all at our end-of-season banquet on August 11.
WAY TO GO TORPEDO!

Great News! The town of Valdese will be hosting the annual Sprint Triathlon this coming Saturday, June 25th.

10-11:30am
11:30-1pm

Thanks for your support of the Valdese Torpedo!

Meet Results, other Announcements, and Forest City

Congratulations to the Torpedo on two great meets thus far. While we haven't overcome the competition in scoring, the abundance of blue and red ribbons being handed out certainly give Coach Hodges and I cause to be very optimistic about the rest of the season and the League Championship Meet July 30 at Granite Falls.

A few things have come to our attention since the beginning of the season. First, swimmers are leaving meets before the meet is over without checking in with a coach. As a result, several relays have been scratched and other swimmers haven't been able to swim. Please, we implore you, CHECK WITH A COACH BEFORE YOU LEAVE A MEET. We understand that meets may run late, but we still need to know if you have left for any reason. Second, parents please volunteer to help with meets. The best view of the pool is from behind the block working as a timer or stroke and turn judge. A good number of parents have been very gratefully working in these positions at every meet thus far. Please step up and help us run smooth meets by volunteering. If you are interested in helping, but are nervous about what to do, please ask Coach Andersen. There really is very little required in these positions, and you get the best seats in the house.

Finally, parents and swimmers must SIGN UP before a meet. The only way the coaches know if you are attending the meet is if you sign up. This is for EVERY meet we swim. If you think you may make a meet, but aren't sure, sign up anyway. It's easier to remove you from events than to add you in. Sign up sheets are located in the team binder at the pool office desk.

Tomorrow night we swim against Forest City at Forest City. If you have not signed up, please do so or email Coach Andersen at valdeseswimcoach@gmail.com. Directions to the pool can be found below. Please try to be at the pool as close to 5pm as possible.

Thank you for doing all you can to help the Valdese Torpedo!

Directions to Forest City: Take I-40 West to Exit 103. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left. Take HWY 64 to Rutherford County. After passing through Westminster Community, turn left on Hudlow Rd at the traffic light. Follow Hudlow Rd to West Main Street in Forest City. Turn left on West Main Street. Take the second right (Harris St). The pool is at the end of Harris St.
